"Also hoping for a break is Pacific Gas and Electric Co. Of the 923,000
PG&E customers in the Bay Area who have been without power for some period
since the onslaught began Friday, 42,097 -- mostly on the Peninsula and in
the North Bay -- were still in the dark Monday afternoon, said utility
spokeswoman Marilyn Davin. Crews still had hundreds of downed power lines
to repair.

In Napa, residents near downtown got a rude awakening at about 3 a.m. when
the Napa River overflowed its banks and poured over the Behrens Street
bridge. Several businesses were flooded along Clinton Street off Main Street.

San Francisco had numerous downed trees and power poles and backed-up storm
drains, but the Department of Public Works managed to clear many of the
problems by the afternoon.

In the Sierra, 40 inches of snow have fallen at the base of Squaw Valley
Resort.

It wasn't just the Bay Area that had problems. In Sacramento, high winds
toppled three trees outside the state Capitol. While lawmakers tried to cut
the state budget inside, chain-saw-wielding workers outside diced up a
130-year-old Italian stone pine, a palm tree and a Heritage Oak that stood
80 feet tall."

QUOTES:
"SAN FRANCISCO - A winter storm system spewing driving rain and high winds
along the Pacific Coast has contributed to several deaths, cut power to
thousands of people and toppled numerous trees.

Interstate 80, the key link through the Sierra between northern Nevada and
northern California, was temporarily shut down by wind-whipped snow early
Monday and chains or snow tires were required on all other roads in the
mountains.

The rainfall in northern California combined with high winds — about 50 mph
with gusts up to 70 mph — downed power lines, toppled trees and damaged
power poles. At the summit of Mt. Diablo, east of San Francisco Bay, gusts
reached 100 mph, and winds were strong enough to knock panels off a
building in downtown San Francisco.

High water temporarily shut down Highway 101 at the Marin-Sonoma county
line north of San Francisco. Up to 3 feet of snow was expected in Lake
Tahoe — adding to several feet that fell over the weekend.

High winds knocked down trees and fences in Petaluma, said Lt. Dave Sears
of the Petaluma Police Department. Winds reached 80 mph in the coastal
mountain town of Cazedero, Benjamin said."
