FROM STAFF REPORTS

ASHEVILLE - Powerful morning wind gusts downed more than 100 trees in the Asheville area, taking out power on the city's northside
and in Oteen.

By late morning Asheville emergency crews were called to 60 incidents, though no injuries were reported. City work crews began
clean-up efforts in coordination with Carolina Power and Light by 11 a.m. and reported the more significant power line damage
occurred on Charlotte street.

There, a feeder line was damaged, causing the numerous power outages in north Asheville.

Throughout the region, Thursday night wind gusts of up to 60 miles per hour left thousands across Western North Carolina in the dark
this morning.

CPL reprted 12,688 outages in its 10-county coverage area, which includes hard-hit Buncombe County.

"Crews are working now," CPL spoesperson Julie Hans said Friday morning. "They'll have to wait until the winds die down a little
more to make significant progress, but they are working now."

Duke Power, which provides electrical services to the state's six westernmost counties, also reported outages. The number of those
without power Friday morning wasn't available.

Hans said CPL has workers in place to handle the wind damage. She said the threat of bad weather earlier this week prompted CPL to
turn its western region crews back home from the eastern sections of the state. They had been helping that region recover following
a devastating ice storm earlier this month.

The National Weather Service has WNC under a high-wind warning through noon. The weather service also cautioned travelers that
freezing rain was possible at elevations above 5,000 feet.

Hans urged residents to stay clear of downed power lines. To report power outages or downed lines to CPL, call 919- 546-6189.

The City of Asheville requests that residents limit 911 calls to emergencies.
