[STORMREPORTS] nw va: 1st ice pic

From: smwincva_wxman{at}webtv.net
Date: Wed Dec 11 2002 - 16:07:32 EST

Winchester, VA (4pm Wed)

Ice accumulations of 1/4 to 1/2" on trees & other exposed surfaces
following 12 hours of freezing rain. Once it is safe, i will venture to
backyard to retrieve rainfall data.

Sounds of falling & snapping trees have filled the air today, & even the
1st chain saw a bit ago.

At least one throughfare (Valley Ave, or US 11) is closed. City workers
have removed 1 truck full of chipped branches from just 2 blocks of the
street. As the streets are cleared, more limbs continue to fall.

Electric, phone & cable outages continue. I lost my cable for 20
minutes, & it's back on now.

Several reports of trees hitting houses. In fact in this image from my
house, a large limb brushed the side of wall of the house. The limb is
about 4" thick, & blocks my normal access from the back of the house.

Also one report of a severed pole.

I hope to be finishing my snow (Dec 5) album tonight, & then will do one
on this event.

=======
nw va: ice up to 1/2" thick

Winchester VA (12:30pm Wed)

Freezing Rain (ZR), & a little sleet began at 2am. Moderate ZR fell at
times into the mid am. At this time, trees, limbs & wires are falling
citywide on a continuos basis. Several thoroughfares are closed by
downed trees or the anticipation of additional collapse.

Snow plows are being used open roads of fallen limbs when passable.
"Barricade 6" , a FD pick up truck, is being used to close streets as
necessary.

The city will have contractors assist in cleanup on Friday.

In my yard, out of 11 trees, at this time all are standing, er, bent
over, at noon. However i have lost 3 limbs about 3-4" in diameter.

I measured 1/4 to 1/3" of ice on most surfaces, and up to 1/2" of ice on
a few limbs.

At last check, radar showed the back edge moving thru in the next few
hours. Temp now is at 32.

I will try to post more later, but lights have flickered several times
in the last 1/2 hour. I still have power & phone, but cable went out at
11:45am.
