[STORMREPORTS] Thousands Homeless After Damaging Typhoon in Guam

There were two stories released by the Associated Press today on the
incredible damage that the Guam typhoon caused. Typhoons pass over the
island with frequency but this one seems to have been the worst in at least
a decade if not longer, according to residents there. Here are links to both:

And here is a summary:

"HAGATMA, Guam - Scores of federal emergency workers headed for Guam on
Wednesday and millions of dollars in supplies were being airlifted in the
aftermath of Typhoon Pongsona. No official estimate of damage was
available, but Philip Flores, BankPacific president and chief executive
officer, estimated it could be in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

Preliminary inspections identified more than 2,000 destroyed homes when the
storm ripped across the U.S. island territory with winds up to 180 mph (290
kph), Federal Emergency Management Agency (news - web sites) officials
said. The storm paralyzed the territory, cutting off all electricity and
water. Concrete telephone poles were snapped in half. Corrugated tin
roofing was peeled off housetops as if they were sardine cans. Cars,
flipped over and stacked three high, littered the roadways.

Two fuel tanks that ignited during the storm burned themselves out on
Wednesday, but fires still burned through parts of the island's fuel
storage facility. Plumes of smoke, visible for miles, still rose from tanks."
