Temperatures dipped into the teens over much of western North Carolina
Friday night and were only at the freezing mark on the immediate
coast. 1.3 million people in North Carolina are still without power, for a
third day since last week's ice storm. Temps at the Virginia border dipped
into the single digits and parts of Virginia were below zero.

 From the National Weather Service:

...Record low temperatures in Lynchburg and Blacksburg Virginia...
The overnight low at the airport in Lynchburg Virginia fell to
8 degrees...breaking the previous record of 15 set in 1882.
At the NWS office in Blacksburg the low was 1 degree below
zero...breaking the previous record of 2 above...set in 1977.
The low this morning in Blacksburg is also the first time since
February 1996 that the temperature has been below zero...

QUOTES FROM ARTICLE:

"CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - With the National Guard already on alert, Gov. Mike
Easley planned to tour the state Saturday to survey damage from a
devastating winter storm. About 1.3 million people in North Carolina and
South Carolina remained without power early Saturday. Frustrated utilities
pushed back earlier promises and acknowledged Friday most customers won't
have power back until next Wednesday night, exactly a week after an ice
storm began blowing through.
BellSouth spokesman Clifton Metcalf said North Carolina's largest telephone
company had about 24,000 lines out of service early Friday. Areas without
phone service probably also were without commercial electricity, he
said. At least 27 deaths across the nation had been blamed on the storm
since it blew across the Southern Plains earlier in the week, sending snow
and ice from New Mexico to New York."
