Once again this fall a winter storm has set records in the East.
Here in Central PA at WeatherMatrix HQ, I can tell you that we have not had
significant snow (and this is our *3rd* significant storm this fall!) this
early since I have lived here ('97). Official records* also sing that same
tune for the last 10 years, though Dec. 5, 1996 did bring 5" of snow (we
recorded 7.5" today).
In the Hickory, NC area, this was the earliest and biggest December snow in
AT LEAST the last 10, maybe 20, years. Here is a list of signficant (>1")
December snowfalls at Hickory in the last 20 years:
Dec. 4-5, 2002 : 9.5" (official records for Hickory*)
Dec. 23, 1998 : 5.9" (official records for Hickory)
Dec. 20, 1993 : 2.8" (official records for Hickory)
Dec. ??, 1989 : ?.?" (my records)
Dec. 25, 1981 : ?.?" (my records)
At my parents' house, located in Boomer, NC, which is near Hickory, the
only significant December snowfall that I can remember prior to those was
in 1989 and I'm not sure how much fell or when but I don't believe it was
near the 9.5" in Hickory or the 6.0" recorded in Boomer with this
storm. We did have a White Christmas in 1981 that was a fairly big
snowfall. Beyond that, I did not live there before 1979 so I am unsure of
the records. In summary, it was probably the biggest if not the earliest,
significant snowfall for the Northern Foothills of NC in nearly 20 years!
