QUOTES:
"BATAVIA, N.Y. (AP) - Up to 2 1/2 feet of snow blanketed much of western
New York on Monday, shutting down dozens of schools, snarling traffic and
hitting rural towns the hardest. Frigid air from Canada swept across the
relatively warm Great Lakes over the weekend, producing heavy bands of
snow. With a fresh coating Monday, Rochester had six inches on the ground
and Syracuse had eight inches. Whirling snow slowed traffic on the New York
State Thruway to around 25 mph Sunday afternoon, just as thousands of
Buffalo Bills football fans were homeward-bound. Highway delays extended
through Monday. Dozens of schools closed their doors in Genesee and
Wyoming counties. Heavy snow also fell in parts of Michigan and Wisconsin,
some of it blown by gusting wind. The AAA Michigan auto club had helped
some 1,800 motorists by noon Monday, and snow slowed air traffic at the
Detroit Metropolitan Airport."
