VAN WERT - Homes were destroyed, theaters flattened and factories leveled
as Van Wert County suffered the brunt of Sunday afternoon's tornadoes.
The tornadoes and other storms killed at least four people - two in Van
Wert County and two others in Putnam County - and sent at least 18 people
from Van Wert County and three from Putnam County to hospitals.
Details about the two people who died in Van Wert were sketchy, but Van
Wert Fire Department Chief Jim Steele did say one of the victims was killed
after being thrown from a car. Another man was in critical condition Sunday
night at a hospital in Fort Wayne, Ind., after being trapped inside the
debris that was once a business in Vision Industrial Park.
Seventeen people were taken to Van Wert County Hospital for injuries
related to the tornado, Steele said. The hospital transferred three others
to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne, Ind., and three people were admitted
for treatment, said Jon Tomlinson, patient communication relations. The
remainder were treated and released.
But officials said the human toll could have been worse.

CONTINENTAL - A probable tornado ripped through this northwestern Putnam
County village Sunday afternoon, killing a woman's parents and destroying
their mobile home.
Denver and Cretie Branham, ages unknown Sunday night, were killed when
their mobile home on state Route 613 was destroyed, Putnam County Sheriff's
Sgt. Brad Nelson said.
The Branhams' daughter, Margie Branham, remained in critical condition at
St. Rita's Medical Center Sunday night.
The storm came through about 3:30 p.m., leaving severe damage in its wake.
It destroyed at least six homes and sent at least three people to the hospital.
Denver Branham's niece, Vanessa Doster, said her brother saw extensive
damage at the Branhams' house.
"There was stuff everywhere, blown across the road. Furniture, everything.
Everywhere," Doster said.
Tom Recker of rural Continental saw the storm coming.
"It was about a quarter 'til four and we were looking to the west and we
could see some blue clouds rolling in. Rolling together. We looked at it
about two minutes and thought, 'Boy this doesn't look good," Recker said.
Recker and his family left their County Road 24 home for about an hour and
stayed with friends in Dupont while the storm went through.
Recker saw some of the destruction on the way home.
"The first thing we saw was debris in the fields ... There were wagons, all
kinds of stuff," Recker said.
Recker said the power went out at his residence around 4 p.m. Sunday and
was still off at 9 p.m.
The storm caused other damage. A car rolled over on County Road 21 south of
the Putnam-Defiance County line. Wagner Saw Mill on County Road X was
damaged. Homes in Continental and Miller City were damaged and power lines
and trees were down across the area, the sheriff's office said.
Unlike Van Wert County, no school closings were reported in Putnam County.
