October had its extremes:
83 Hi 10-02
29 Lo 10-30
Total precipitation: 9.15" / Last October we had 1.25" It was then we began a drought that some feel is not yet overcome.
This brings our total Prec. for 2002 to 44.70" with two months to go.
2001 = 49.86" 2000 = 45.35" 1999 = 41.28" 1998 = 41.64
About 1430 Hrs on Tuesday 10-29 it began to sleet heavily with several inches of accumulation. The sleet became snowy and total 'white' accumulation was 3" or 0.45" precipitation. The snow mixed with rain/sleet continued throughout the night and the foliage laden trees hung heavy with ice Wednesday and early Thursday. About 1400Hrs on Thursday I discovered patches of 'white' accumulation in several shady areas.
We travelled to Klingerstown PA Tues. afternoon which is N/NW of here and encountered heavy wet snow. The still foliated trees were beautiful but endangered with the heavy wet snow.
Folklore has it that the date of the first snow dictates how many snows are coming for that winter. Lots of talk about the possibility of 29 snows this winter. I cannot figure out if that means 29 more or does one deduct the first one with only 28 to come?
