[STORMREPORTS] Oppressive Heat & Humidity In Northeast (Last Day)

From: Jesse Ferrell (WeatherMatrix) (jesse{at}weathermatrix.net)
Date: Thu Jul 04 2002 - 16:35:09 EDT

Both NWS Apparent Temperatures and AccuWeather RealFeel Temperatures were
over 110 at many stations on the East Coast today, with RealFeels as high
as 122 and Apparent Temperatures as high as 115 in Virginia at around noon.

MANY stations from the Carolinas to the Megalopolis reported dewpoints in
the 70s. Wallops Island Virginia reported a dewpoint of 81 with a
temperature of 94. Of course automated dewpoint observations are
notoriously unreliable.

Many NWS stations reported temperatures near the century mark, the
following were 100 or over:

FREDRICKSBURG VA EZF 4pm 100
FARMVILLE VA FVX 4pm 102
PETERSBURG VA PTB 3pm 102
CAMP SPRINGS, MD ADW 3pm 100

Many AWS stations (which are obviously not very sheltered) reported
temperatures between 110 and 115 degrees:

Here at WeatherMatrix HQ in Central PA:
Max Temp 94.6 °F {at} 03:46 pm
Heat Index Max 105.0 °F {at} 03:42 pm
http://www.weathermatrix.net/wxstation/TWI-WRL/obs/

This marks the 3rd day of 95 degrees or over (a reading of 95 or over had
happened only twice before at this station (1997-present) prior to this
week). Today also marks our third day with a heat index over 105, quite
uncommon here in the mountains of Central Pennsylvania.

A front will pass through the area late evening to overnight, bringing and
end to this vicious heat wave.
