TRENTON, N.J. (Reuters) - New Jersey firefighters cleared brush away from
around a forest fire on Monday that has blackened 1,300 acres of tinder-dry
pine forest and forced hundreds of people from their homes.
About 400 state and local firefighters had contained 90 percent of the fire
by Monday afternoon, about 24 hours after the blaze erupted amid high winds
near a cranberry bog in a 1.1 million-acre forest known as the Pine
Barrens. The winds died down on Monday, allowing firefighters to remove
brush and other combustible material from a perimeter around the blaze.
