Good evening.. here is a run down on the events of this evening that
impacted north central Missouri.
At around 3:00 pm CDT the SPC issued a tornado watch, well two of them to
be exact covering my Skywarn area. until 8:00 pm for the first few hours of
this watch hardly anything happened. I was thinking.. BUST BUST BUST..
At around 4:45pm a tornado warning was issued for buchanan county in
Missouri, which is on our farthest west edge. we tracked this storm as it
quickly exited buchanan county into western DeKalb County.. however, at
this time my attention was becoming fixed on a tiny little storm that just
popped up in Platte county, near Platte City, after a quick plot i realized
if it held it's own it would track right through the heart of my area.
about 5:00 pm the first stations started checking in to our informal net,
amongst the first to check in were NW0B, Jerry from Brookfield, and KG0QD,
Ken, from Chillicothe.
Then at 5:49 pm the Weather Service in Pleasant Hill issued a TORNADO
warning for Northern Caldwell county, for this cell that I had noticed
about an hour ago just north of Kansas City. The NWS said the tornado was
developing near Miraible or about 36 miles west of Chillicothe, moving east
at 45mph. at around 5:56 pm I started advising stations to in western
Livingston county to either get to there spotting postions or seek shelter
quickly.
At 6:02 pm NWS radar showed the developing tornado 4 miles south of
Hamilton, or about 24 miles west of Chillicothe moving east at 50-60mph. at
this time, I started advising all the stations in Chillicothe and areas
around there to seek shelter if they were not going to be spotting.. and if
they were, to stay close to shelter.
at 6:15 pm the NWS issued a tornado warning, including the city of
Chillicothe. (Chillicothe is the home base for our repeater and amateur
radio club) this storm was headed right for Chillicothe, of course once the
Sirens started in town, lots of people showed up, WB0JQQ who is located NW
of Chillicothe, checked in and reported the norm, dark clouds, lots of
movement, but nothing exciting yet, then a chaser, with the uni. of
Missouri i think it was, KC0LIB checked in, from 3 miles west of
Chillicothe reporting rotation to there N-NW.. (at this point i was started
to wonder about our repeater site, which is located adjacent to KCDJ; or
about 2NW of Chillicothe, along MO-190)
at 6:28 pm KC0LIB/KQ0QD reported a funnel cloud over Northwestern
Chillicothe, or just NW of Chillicothe, basically right on top of our
repeater site (oh boy, we gunna blow away the repeater.) the funnel cloud
and rotation tracked right along highway 190 into and through the north
side of Chillicothe.. before the rotation started to weaken and the storm
hauled a$$ north-north east, to near Chula in NE Livingston county. luckily
for us, the repeater site held fast, and didn't miss a beat, kudos to
Larry, K0MPT for the repeater.
We weren't done with this storm yet.. we got a public report of rotation,
with a funnel cloud, again, this time it was bout 6 miles east of Chula,
again, hauling east at round 60 mph. the chase team with KC0LIB, and WA0NKE
who was chasing the storm had an awful time catching the thing, mainly due
to fast movement and bad roads. many times the chasers would get stuck
having to work back north or even west before they could go east to catch
the thing.
then at 6:52pm NWS issued a tornado warning for Northern Linn County,
covering such cities as new Boston and Linneus. A third station, KB0VMK
checked in from Linneus, to report little of anything going on, however he
was joining the chase.. and he headed out toward New Boston via Purdin.
however the only thing he found was water over the road along rte. C in
Linn County. as the storm once again began to loose it's tornadic-ness it
started racing to the northeast, upwards of 60 MPH. and by 7:15 p.m. the
storm was pushing into SE Sullivan county, and Adair County. up near
Kirksville. it was at this time that we started to wind down our
operations, upon coordination with Jerry, NW0B, we decided to end the net
at 7:30 pm after the tornado warning for Linn county expired.
