(From Herald Sun)

Flash flooding in Melbourne kept State Emergency
Service (SES) volunteers busy this morning as they
responded to more than 40 calls for help.

The busiest areas were the western suburbs,
particularly Keilor, SES spokesman Peter Cocks said.
Heavy rain in the state's northeast also forced the
cancellation of the Wangaratta race meeting.

But Mr Cocks said storm damage was minimised due to
relatively light winds.

"In severe storms we usually receive more than a
hundred calls," said Mr Cocks.

"The damage has mainly been due to flash flooding, and
there is not much we can do about that: it goes away
as quickly as it comes."

Twelve bus passengers were stranded by floodwaters in
St Albans, and had to be evacuated by SES volunteers.

One home near the Calder Freeway was damaged after its
carport collapsed.

The bureau of meteorology said the rain from the
western suburbs had cleared and the threat of further
flash flooding had eased.
