[STORMREPORTS] ----- REMINDER OF THIS LIST'S POLICIES : Give Your LOCATION! -----

STORMREPORTS LIST STATUS 3/21/2002: 1015 SUBSCRIBERS, 3594 MESSAGES SINCE
5/2000

Personal Note: I really appreciate all of the reports that come through
this list, I believe it is an important resource for WeatherMatrix so THANKS!

I have added two new policies to this list, so perk up your ears:

#1. STATE YOUR LOCATION! I am still getting a lot of complaints that
reports are sent to the storm reports list with no location, at least say
something like "Central Pennsylvania" if not your actual town. Without
this information, your report is not useful to the thousand of us who read
it in email and thousands more who read it on the website. Thanks!

#2. NO FORECAST DISCUSSIONS: Some time ago I made a decision to keep
forecast discussions off this list and I created a new list, called
WX-FORECAST, at YahooGroups, which now may be getting the attention it
deserves due to promotion by Yahoo, so check it out. Post to the
stormreports lists about forecast storms ONLY if it is close enough for the
NWS to issue advisories. Thanks!

The standard policies are listed below. With a few seconds of time from
you, we can make this list easier to use and more useful to the end user.

YOU TOO CAN GET A DIGEST (ONE EMAIL PER DAY) FROM THIS LIST, SEE BOTTOM FOR
INSTRUCTIONS.

A couple of reminders on the policies for posting to these lists. Please
read these suggestions carefully, a few seconds of your time can help
improve the list and get your messages through much quicker. Thanks!

#1: REPLIES GO TO THE GROUP, NO PERSONAL MESSAGES.
#2: REMOVE THE PREVIOUS MESSAGE.
#3: THIS LIST IS FOR REPORTS OF CURRENT SEVERE OR UNUSUAL WEATHER ONLY.
#4: DON'T POST (JUST) NWS STATEMENTS.
#5: DON'T POST (JUST) SNOWFALL AMOUNTS.

See below for why.

The StormReports List posts are Moderated (approved by an editor) to avoid
"unsubscribe me's", off topic posts, computer virus postings (real or
hoax), "me too's", etc. WE ARE LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEER MODERATORS. Especially
for overnights. Please contact me for more information.

#1: REPLIES GO TO THE GROUP, NO PERSONAL MESSAGES: If you hit "Reply", your
message will attempt to go to the entire list, so if you are addressing
someone personally, you want to copy their email address from the message
and paste it into your "TO:" window. Technically, the personal reply will
hopefully be caught by a moderator and it will be shelved, but we will NOT
forward it on to the person. Once every week or so we go in and reject
these back to you.

#2: REMOVE THE PREVIOUS MESSAGE: Please remove all extraneous text from the
previous person's message, we have all seen it and don't really need it
twice, especially the signature files :) This uses up unnecessary bandwith,
server space, and clutters the list and Digest(which double in size).
Cluttered Digests cause unsubscriptions from the list, and unsubscribed
members don't keep up with WeatherMatrix and eventually drop out of the
organization. Technically, we can edit your message, but usually don't have
time to for a week or two, and by then your message will look out of place.
On the other hand, quoting the person's previous message (the part you are
replying to anyway) is acceptable. All we're asking is that you clean it up
a little.

#3: THIS LIST IS FOR REPORTS OF CURRENT SEVERE OR UNUSUAL WEATHER ONLY. The
WeatherMatrix list, at the URL below, takes other conversations. For
additional guidance on appropriate topics for the StormReports list, visit
the archives or the main page below.

#4: DON'T POST (JUST) NWS STATEMENTS: At this time we do not support the
transmission of MOST plain NWS statements to the list, with the exception
of the list below, because there are so many (>50,000 per day). Severe
weather statements are archived at <http://www.weathermatrix.net/archive/>
The following NWS statements ARE ACCEPTABLE:
NWS Record Statements
NWS Damage Surveys
NWS Snow Total Summaries
NHC Tropical Depression, Storm, or Hurricane formation statements (first only)
Any NWS text with the important portions clipped in and related commentary
from you

#5: DON'T POST (JUST) SNOWFALL AMOUNTS: We urge you to post SNOW reports to
the SnowMatri(<http://www.weathermatrix.net/snowmatrix/>) rather than
cluttering up the
list with them, unless you are sending additional information, such as a
storm summary, record set, or damage report.
