BEIJING –– A thick storm of choking dust turned
Beijing's skies an apocalyptic yellow Wednesday,
severely reducing motorists' visibility and coating
trees and people with a fine layer of dirt.

Cyclists covered their mouths with their hands; cars
drove with their headlights on.

Dust storms choke northern China nearly every spring,
often blown off the dry expanses of the Mongolian
desert plain. The first "shachenbao," or "sand-dust
tempest," of 2002 struck Beijing this weekend.

The latest storm was expected to last through Thursday
and blanket a swathe of country from northwest China's
Gansu province to the eastern seaboard, the Beijing
Morning Post reported, quoting weather officials.

In Gansu, visibility was expected to drop to almost
zero, the newspaper said. In Beijing, the haze erased
everything beyond 150 yards.

The Beijing weather bureau advised people to stay
indoors, but police said traffic in the Chinese
capital was normal.
