STATE COLLEGE -- Some 200 customers and store employees rushed to safety
when a newly constructed wall at the North Atherton Plaza Wal-Mart
collapsed and snapped a gas line around noon Saturday.
Store co-manager Christian Winters said 30 to 40 yards of the wall
collapsed, possibly knocked down by gusting winds. He said losses could top
$300,000 in repair costs and lost business, but safety for employees and
customers is paramount.
AccuWeather meteorologist Mike Sager said strong winds spawned by a storm
north of Lake Superior and a cold front passing through the area Saturday
caused
40 mph gusts that may have been sufficient to topple the wall.
"The National Weather Service issued a high-wind warning," Sager said. "It
called for winds of 30 to 40 mph from the south with gusts as high as 60 mph.
