The Philippines braced Monday for its first typhoon of
the year as Mitag churned toward the main island of
Luzon with powerful gusts of up to 195 kilometers (121
miles) an hour.
Weathermen raised the lowest of a four-stage alert
over the central island of Samar and the northeast
coast of the southern island of Mindanao, expected to
be whipped by rain-laden winds of up to 60 kilometers
(37 miles) an hour overnight.
The eye of the storm should pass within 210 kilometers
(130 miles) northeast of Legaspi city on the southern
end of Luzon on Thursday afternoon, the weather bureau
here said.
However, there are indications it "may track more
northward and move towards southern Japan" instead.
Typhoon Mitag has maximum sustained winds of 160
kilometers (99 miles) an hour with gusts of up to 195
kilometers (121 miles) an hour, it added.
An average of 20 storms or typhoons visit this
southeast Asian archipelago every year, inflicting
thousands of casualties and damaging crops and
infrastructure.
