Subject: Another surprise snowfall in the Pacific Northwest

The last week has seen a series of storms that have surprised many northwest forecasters with the snowfall amounts at lower levels. Last nights prediction of 1 to 2 inches instead saw amounts north of Seattle, and in the Cascade foothills to the east total as much as a foot. At this reporting station 8" were measured bringing the total snowfall for the last week to almost 16". This has been the heaviest snowfall since 20+ inches fell over Christmas week of 1995. Currently, temperatures are warming and snow has shifted over to rain except for counties north of Seattle and altitudes above 1000'. Interstate 90 has just reopened following closure for avalanche control. Additional closures are anticipated. Northwest snowpacks are in many locations at record levels, with some areas at 200% to as much as 400% of normal.
