Hi weatherfolks,
after a few weeks with mostly calm and mild weather
across much of ctrl EUR (high pressure over the
Alps/Italia was dominant),several systems moved trough
during the last couple of days with strong winds and
,sometimes , heavy rain that caused local flooding
because of snowmelt in the higher elev.
The first storm began on saturday lasting for about
20h, caused by a strong pressure gradient rather than
by a compact system...
Gusts up to 95km/h were recorded in the area where I
live.
But yesterday, It got even worse when a coldfront
brought an end to very mild conditions across parts of
southern/SE Germany (14-15°C in some places)
A small line of heavy rain (was very good to see on
radar) moved trough along with gusts between 90 and
100km/h.
Behind this feature, upper-level cooling (
shortwave)caused developing of some thunderstorms in
portions of northern Germany (Berlin was also
affected) with very heavy rain showers, small hail and
even hurricane-force winds (Berlin-airport 122km/h;
Manschnow 126km/h), while regions furher south (Alps)
still got sunny skies and mild sw-winds.
But it wasn´t over yet.
The main storm field moved trough during the evening,
causing more damage to trees and some buildings.
The weather pattern is heavily influenced by a strong
steering low pressure system across the Atlantic and a
high over the Mediterranean...
regards,
Lars Lowinski; AACHEN, Germany
