In the three years I have lived here in Monterey I have never seen
weather conditions like we have had in the past 24 hours. To add to
yesterday's email, at 1545 I had ventured back up to DLI through rain and
hail and at my destination, at an elevation of ~400ft, rain briefly mixed
with and changed over to wet snow. From DLI, I could easily make out the
snow-covered Santa Cruz mountains across the bay and snow-capped Mt. Toro
(3750ft) to the east.
Overnight, the snow remained above sea level here in Monterey, but we
did have a couple bouts of hail showers with temps in the mid 30s. At my
house in Fort Ord, approximately six miles to the north, we bottomed out a
32 this morning and there was an unusual mixture of frost, hail and frozen
rain coating everything. Some of the less traveled side streets even had
black ice. Even at KMRY the official low was 32, which is very impressive
given that sky conditions remained BKN to OVC throughout the night. The
lowest minimum I can recall, even away from the coast was around 40. During
the drive to work I could see that snow covered many of the hills
surrounding Monterey. A dusting was visible as low as 500ft and maybe
lower.
Alas, the convection is moving out to sea now as offshore flow around
the upper level low now dominating the steering flow. I think I'll take my
daughter south into the Santa Lucias to play in her first snow.

Very interesting stories about the snow in California, Paul. I can imagine
how excited everybody must have been. We had a dusting of light snow around
daybreak here this morning, about 2mm , mostly gone now as the temp. is above
freezing at 1.4 c. This was'nt expected until this evening. I think this
spell of cold weather is just about over, so I'll be able to get my plants
out of the basement. Syd.
