Word from the NHC:
http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/text/MIATWOAT.html

"530 AM EDT FRI OCT 12 2001
A STRONG NON-TROPICAL STORM JUST WEST OF BERMUDA IS MOVING NORTHWEST
ABOUT 10 TO 15 MPH. SATELLITE IMAGERY INDICATES THAT WHILE THE
SYSTEM HAS INTENSIFIED DURING THE NIGHT...IT CURRENTLY LACKS THE
THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY NECESSARY TO CALL IT A TROPICAL CYCLONE.
THIS SYSTEM STILL HAS THE POTENTIAL TO DEVELOP INTO A TROPICAL
STORM OR HURRICANE DURING THE NEXT 12 TO 24 HOURS..."

And from AccuWeather:
"This is the worst storm to hit the island since Emily in
1987. Winds at the airport have gusted to 80 mph ( we don't know what
they have had on the beach), and gales have wacked the island for 18
hours
with another 6-12 hours to go."
