Good Evening from Temple, Texas
A major flood event in and around Temple today as reports of up to 9" of
rain fell across the area. There are about 20 streets around the city of
Temple that are closed tonight due to high water. Numerous major roads are
closed across the county, including Interstate 35 in Troy, about 5 miles
north of Temple. All but one road into Morgan's Point Resort, located about
5 miles west of Temple, are closed. There was a high water rescue involving
a helicopter from nearby by Fort Hood as a motorist was swept off a county
road five miles east of Temple. The Temple Police Department reported more
than 50 traffic accidents and there were more calls for emergency services
than there were personnel to handle the calls. An emergency shelter has been
set up in one of the cities middle schools for any displaced residents.
There have been no reports of injuries, including the driver involved in the
high water rescue.
The Temple airport is reporting 9" of rain since midnight, a ham operator in
Troy, five miles north of Temple reported 8.7", one of the local TV stations
that has current conditions on one of local cable channels is reporting
7.07". Another ham on the north side of Temple reported 6.2". I had 4.5" at
my location on the south side of town. Total rain at my location since
Sunday now stands at 9.5" but there are reports of up to 15" from other
locations.
A Flash Flood Watch remains in effect through tonight as more locally heavy
rainfall is possible tonight and tomorrow morning.
