Tropical Storm Flossie emerged off the Pacific coast
of Mexico on Sunday, forming out of a storm that had
spread rains over a wide area of western Mexico.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center (news - web sites)
said Flossie was centered about 225 miles southwest of
the tip of the Baja California Peninsula, with maximum
sustained winds of about 40 mph.
It was moving to the west, away from land, at about 11
mph, and was expected to strengthen over the coming
three days.
Tropical depressions become tropical storms when
maximum sustained winds reach 39 mph and hurricanes at
74 mph.
Mexico's National Meteorological Service said the
storm, which has been building off the coast for more
than a day, contributed to heavy rains across much of
the central and southern Pacific coast.
Civil defense officials in the southern state of
Guerrero reported Saturday that several small
communities had been isolated by rain-fed flooding.
