Floods devastate W.Va. and Va.
Heavy rain, mud hit states for third
timein a month
MULLENS, W.Va., July 30 — West
Virginia's governor warned
residents to remain on alert
Monday after torrential rains
flooded wide swaths of the state
and neighboring Virginia, saying
the waterlogged ground could
leadto more devastating floods
and mudslides. Asnmuch as 7
inches of rain fell in some areas
over the weekend, leaving two
dead,whole towns under water,
roads impassable and emergency
crewspaddling to the rescue.
Officials said that the states have had
the equivalent of six months of
precipitation and that the ground is so
soaked and the soil on mountainsides
so soft that just a few inches of new
rainfall can be as damaging as a half-
foot ormore under normal conditions.
