TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) - Typhoon Toraji pounded Taiwan on Monday, triggering
landslides that killed six people, shutting down the capital and threatening
the island's main high-tech area that is home to many of the world's biggest
computer chipmakers. The storm first hit land during the night near the
east-central county of Hualien, about 100 miles south of the capital, Taipei.
Forecasters predicted the typhoon would continue whirling through northern
Taiwan before heading for southern China.Heavy rains caused a landslide that
buried a home in mountainous Hualien County, killing six people, said
emergency official Cheng Chin-feng. Mudslides were reported in other areas of
central Taiwan, and officials were trying to confirm reports of missing
people.Normally congested streets in the capital were eerily empty during
morning rush hour as most schools and government offices - including the
stock market - were closed because of the storm. Toraji, named after a
popular flower in North Korea (<A HREF="http://rd.yahoo.com/DailyNews/manual/*http://search.news.yahoo.com/search/news?p=%22North%20Korea%22&c=&n=20&yn=c&c=news&cs=nw">news</A> - <A HREF="http://rd.yahoo.com/DailyNews/manual/*http://search.yahoo.com/bin/search?p=North%20Korea&cs=nw">web sites</A>), was supposed to hit land
near Taipei late Monday morning or early afternoon.Taiwan's most famous
high-tech industrial park, Hsinchu, was in the path of the storm. If the
typhoon causes power outages in the park - the island's version of Silicon
Valley - expensive delays could be caused at the computer chip plants
there.Packing winds of up to 115 mph, the storm was moving northwest at 10
mph, said the Joint Typhoon Warning Center in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.Cable news
reports showed coffee-colored flood waters flowing down the narrow streets of
Nantou in central Taiwan and palm trees that were ripped out of the ground by
high winds.Flights and trains were canceled between Taipei and cities in
central and southeastern Taiwan. Fishing boats from China were taking refuge
in Taiwanese ports.Toraji follows five other tropical storms that have hit
Taiwan this year.Typhoon Utor, the strongest so far, lashed Taiwan, the
Philippines and China last month, killing at least 46 people in China, 121 in
the Philippines and one in Taiwan.Tropical storms and typhoons hit the region
frequently during the summer. Typhoons develop west of the international date
line, while hurricanes are spawned east of the line. They are known as
cyclones in the Indian Ocean.
