Storm report:
5:00 PM on Friday, June 22nd, 2001: A line of storms associated with a
cold front spawned a tornado in the rural town of Wingate, NC ( Union
County ) at approximately 5:03 PM. The Union Co. Sheriff's Office and
EMS were dispatched immediately and upon arrival, significant damage had
occured to a group of townhomes on Pfifer Road, just 1 mile outside of
Wingate University. 1 person was injured and sent to Union Regional
Medical Center. 10 others were homeless due to the storm. The red cross
was called in and temporary shelter was made at Forest Hills High
School. Storm was "on the ground" for approximately 2 1/2 minutes. Large
hail accompanied the cell, and the residents of Wingate and Monroe
should consider themselves lucky. This cell struck an area of the county
which is mostly rural and unpopulated. Should the cell have struck 1
mile to the south-west, it would have his the center of Wingate, and if
the cell struck 4 miles to the west-south-west, Monroe ( pop. 26,000 )
would have been in the path. Early estimated call the storm an F-1, but
we will know when the National Weather Service investigates later
today. Alan Michael Teitleman
