I just talked to the reporter who is writing the story of the severe
flash flooding in my county today. She said a State of Emergency was
declared by local government officials.
A communications tower is not functioning tonight, I am unsure if it
was damaged by flooding or power loss. It will cause the the area
hardest hit to be w/o reliable communication for the sheriff & fire
departments. The FD's were told to have manpower to monitor
transmissions.
Several roads have been washed out, including 2 into a residential
subdivision. At 10pm, several more were still under water.
Radar estimates show 4 to 6" totals were common, with maximum amounts in
the area of 8". However, most of the rain came in separate, training
bands w and se of the city, and the center portion of the county had has
"only" of about 1". My total since Thur eve has been .72".
To my south, the flooding was more widespread. The Doppler radar
estimated 6" or more in large sections of Shenandoah & Rockingham Cos.
State Police was reporting helicopter rescues, dozens of road closings,
a rapidly rising (Shenandoah ?) River, and the report of a 100 gallon
propane tank floating down the river.
I was relaying info i heard on the scanners to the NWS, and they issued
warnings based on the need.
It's been a wild night, and at nearing 11:30pm, i have yet to eat
dinner. I'm going to that now, & will be filling a fuller report later
this weekend.
