Six sailors in U.S. yacht rescued off Bermuda
May 8, 2001
HAMILTON, Bermuda (Reuters) -- A cargo ship rescued six sailors from a
44-foot U.S.-registered catamaran on Monday after their mast broke in high
seas off Bermuda, rescue coordinators on the island said. The "Solitude" was
sailing from Bermuda for Stamford, Connecticut, when the crew reported a
broken mast and asked for help, said a spokesman for Bermuda Harbour Radio,
which coordinates rescues from the island. Amid 25-knot winds and 20-foot
waves, the crew, believed to be Americans, said they planned to abandon the
catamaran and Harbour Radio issued an emergency broadcast to ships in the
area. The 950-foot U.S.-registered "Sealand Performance" picked up the crew
160 miles northwest of Bermuda around noon and will drop them off when it
docks later this week in North Carolina. The yacht had left Bermuda, a
British territory which lies 700 miles east of North Carolina, on Sunday.
