Shane,

If you are in GA where I think you are, the frozen precip that you saw was probably sleet. As the cold-core upper low passed by, it probably drew cold air down to the surface, which may have caused some sleet. I know occurances like that have killed the forecasts of some of our meteorologists here, who were saying rain, but were surprised by snow. The sleet would also explain the 60dbz as sleet frequently causes much higher dbz radar returns

  Subject: [WEATHERFUN] Strange Happening

I awoke this morning to the sound of banging on the windows, children crying
and a very loud whistling sound. After comforting the crying children (and
myself) to give them a feeling of safety, I started investigating all the
noises that were going on. The windows were covered with water and through
the blurred window, I could see the trees outside swaying quickly back and
forth. I immediately took off down stairs to see what the trusty Davis
Weather Monitor II was reporting. The winds were currently gusting to 38 Mph
with a high gust of 42 Mph. After looking at the wind readings for a brief
moment, I then took to the door. I could not believe what I was seeing, it
was covered...the trampoline and most other surfaces had a nice coating of
what I guessed to be sleet?! I suppose it could have been hail, but it was
very small (like sleet), and there was no thunder or lightning with it at
all. A combination of strong winds, heavy rain and sleet (or hail) make for
a very loud disturbance on a Sunday morning while you are sleeping well. The
kids were very frightened by the loud window noise that the wind and the
sleet (or hail) contributed to. After the precipitation had stopped, the
winds calmed a great deal only gusting into the 20's with average winds
speeds around 10 mph. It was like a summer storm without the thunder and
lighting. I might want to add that the temp was at 47° when it started and
dropped to near 41° in about 10 minutes. Also, the dewpoint was 40° at the
time it started. One more thing, on the radar at the time of the happening,
the max DBZ was at 35. Since that time, as the line moved to the east, it
has greatly enhanced with a current DBZ of 60.

I am looking for suggestions to whether this could have been sleet or hail.
I have a daily tabular file on my page that has the report for that time
frame on it. If any of you would like to view it go to
http://www.hemc.net/~sadams/daily.html or you can navigate to it by going to
my main page at http://www.hemc.net/~sadams/ and then clicking on Wx Tabular
Data and then clicking on Today.

  Thanks

  Shane
