 Winchester VA

Despide brilliant late March sunshine, the temperature struggled, rising
only 5 degrees during the day Mon.

What made this record cold event even more incredible was the previous
record cold Mar 26 was wet-- (no sun). On Mar 26, 1978 the days high was
39 (my reading at 12:01am). The airport high then was 35 (probably about
7am.)
A cold rain became a wintry mix which became mostly ZR by afternoon. ZR
fell that night, which became rain again Easter Sunday & ended Monday
am, totalling 1.85" for the storm. There was a flash flood watch which
became a warning on 3-27-78.

Now back to Mon, the high of 35.3º was at 1:39pm, the evening low
(11:51pm) was 21.7º.
We were 23º below normal. If this had happened in Jan, the high would
have been only 18º or colder.

Windchills averaged in the about 10-15º, with the low WC of -5º, &
PWG of 26mph was at 10:03am.

Scattered snow showers & SF's were reported, and a co-op observer
reported a TR of snow & and a snow shower in progress in the 8am report
in a town 10 miles west of here.
The coldest of for today 34 was in 1955. The coldest low for today was
20 in 1983, very close to that this am, and 18 on Thur am. The NWS
thinks we have a likelihood of breaking tonight's record.

freeze dried
I generally will hang my wash outdoors, except in Dec & Jan, when cold
temps and shortened sunlight factors into poor drying.

Having a low humidity [25%], a stiff breeze <bad pun>, and brilliant
sunlight, i decided to give it a try Mon. Many of the clothes froze
quickly, even before they were hung. While there was some drying, the
still had to be peeled from the clothes line. And if given the same wx
next Mon, they would _all_ go in the dryer. That's because all the
hassle only saved me about 2 hours (or 1/4) the total dryer tie needed.

On the photo, the shirt is frozen in the slightly twisted way i hung it.
