Well, just returned from work about 27 miles southwest of here, (Asheville) and boy what a different world you can step into in just that distance. There was never any changeover to rain from the airport (just 9 miles south) to the Transylvania county line and the five lane roads were visible only in deep ruts. Temps were hovering around the 33 degree mark, but just the sheer power of the snow that was falling piled it up quickly. Snow that had continued to pile up in the middle of the ruts was scraping the bottom of my car, and in places, felt it pick the car up off the road almost high centering it. Then during my stay at work, we lost all power, and gained about 5 more inches of snow. Coming home it was miles before any streetlight or porchlight was burning. Trees down all over the place. Blowing transformers lit up the sky like lightning. Snow on the ground there totalled about 10-11 inches. Real problems on the roads. Some people have been stranded on I-40 west of Asheville since this afternoon. Emerge
ncy vehicles are trying to pick up motorists, bringing gas to people who have run out in the jam, and passing out blankets. There are several miles of cars still stalled. Probably haven't moved in hours. That problem spilled over to I-26 south of Asheville and is backed up about 5 miles. Spent an hour staring at an exit ramp that I couldn't get to. Wow! What a punishing storm. Still expecting more from this bad boy.
