Two Killed by Tornadoes in Florida
MIAMI (March 15) - Two people were killed and at least 10 were injured when
several tornadoes ripped through a rural part of northern Florida's Panhandle
early Thursday, destroying mobile homes, ripping up trees and downing power
lines, officials said.
A 59-year-old man was killed when one tornado, striking before dawn, hit his
mobile home, said Washington County Sheriff Fred Peel. The man's wife was
hospitalized with severe head injuries and died shortly after.
Ten other people were injured, one of them seriously, in the Wausau area of
the county, which lies north of Panama City south of the state line with
Alabama, Peel said.
Peel said about 10 homes were destroyed or badly damaged, most of them mobile
homes, and a number of trees were ripped up in the area. It would be several
days before power was restored to all homes, he said.
''It was unbelievable what it did to them,'' Peel said of the damage to
mobile homes, scattered in a rural area.
The Florida State Emergency Division said two tornadoes also hit neighboring
Jackson County, damaging two homes and one business.
