Winchester (nw) VA
Nearly all local schools went in late Monday & several are starting late
again today in wake of the weekend snowstorm. From looking at snow
totals & satellite images, Jason Breakiron & myself were lucky enough to
be in the "snow zone" by less than 30 miles!
The snow cover has shrunk drastically to 1-2" in sunlit areas to 2-4" in
shaded areas (that were 7" drifts Sun). I contribute that reduction to
melting, evaporation, & compacting.
Many snow covered areas were 12 or colder Mon am. Coldest readings from
NWS observers include 3 at Charles Town WV & 5 in Millwood VA, & NWS'
Sterling office. And while the forecast office is very rural area,
Dulles Airport, which is very urban & a 1 mile away went only to 14.
Mon low was 11.5 at 6:42am, the high 36.4 at 3:26pm. A PWG of 7mph at
10:26am. Low windchill was 7 at 6:57am. The barometer was high as
30.56". Cirrus covered the sky until mid afternoon, the we had very
clear starlit evening.
Today's Photo: Local folklore says that if snow remains on trees after a
storm, more is due. 36 hours since it quit, several trees still carry
snow. Note small pines and limbs of larger trees.
FYI, I find this method works 2/3 of the time. The next threat is early
Thur.

AFTER THE STORM
I added this image to my Photopoint album. It is a much better visible
image of how sharp the cutoff was on the snow. The url of the that image

Here is a link for the local news story on Sat. storm (which was
unavailable when i prepared Mon report). We had a fatality wreck at 8am
Sat, during freezing rain. I was asleep when it happened. There no
mention on a local radio station, who is the only source of weekend news
here.
