Winchester (nw) VA

Rain that fell overnight Fri Night gradually mixed w/ sleet & freezing
rain. The precip was light & spotty, falling between 4:30am & 1:30pm.
This resulted in a small coating of ice & 1/4" ice covering the ground.

I went outside about 1:30pm to film the early am storm results. A steady
moderate sleet began, & within the hour it had changed to snow. Almost
immediately side streets became white.

As the snow intensified about 3pm, to moderate & occasionally heavy,
even primary streets became snow covered. The city's snow plan a (snow
tires/chains recommended, road treatments begin) started at 3:30pm.

The 1st inch was on the ground at 3:30pm.
Numerous wrecks kept EMS busy all afternoon & evening, with worst period
about 7pm. Although the number seemed less than half of a weekday AM
snowstorm, there were still about 2 dozen wrecks or vehicles sliding off
the roads. I did not here of any life threating injuries transported,
but several did go to the hospital.

The heaviest snow fell about 11pm - Midnight. Light snow has tapered to
SF's. Most totals were at 2-3" at 2am in metro Washington, w/ snow still
fallen. Will post regional totals & photopoint album later today.

For Sat: The 12:01am high was 36.0. Temps fell very slowly, to 32 about
8am, & thru the low 30s during the afternoon. The temperature fell more
rapidly after 10:30pm. The 11:58pm low was 27.5. My anemometer froze w/
the pre dawn zr, so i have this as incomplete: PWG was 16mph at 3:23am,
& low windchill was 12 at 5:55am. Evening winds at the airport were
sustained at 15-18mph after 11pm.

The increased winds (estimated gusts to 30mph) are causing Blowing &
drifting snow. My final total was called into the NWS as 4.5". I
emphasized i had totals 4 to a few places 6", but drifting tampered the
measurements.
