   => USA Daily Temperature Extremes

National Temperature Extremes
High Sat...84 At Pierce College CA

   => Special Notes

The most interesting feature in the Jan. 8-9 MRF is the movement of a strong
cold low across the
Gulf of Alaska into the Yukon Territory. This feature, at this time of year
tends to act like a block to
cold weather patterns that have been moving in the lower 48 states. It will
also result in the
formation of a fairly strong low over the central southern states around the
10th.

=> Guest Column - Larry Zuravin -- President, Empire Central REACT 3030
Real busy
this week!!
On Thursday December 28, 2000, a repair crew broke a water main in the
downtown area of Schenectady, NY. By daylight it was discovered that the
water was filling up a main telephone trunk line vault. There are over
100 "splices" in this vault. At aprox. 10 am , there were 70,000
residents with out phone service. By 11am the County Manager declared a
State of Emergency in Schenectady County. At this point RACES was
activated and a general plea for Amaturers help went out in the Albany,
Schenectady, Troy area. It was at this point the resources of Empire
Central REACT (personnel, repeaters, mobile units) were requested. Larry
Zuravin, outgoing Team President, started calling up members. By 1400
Larry (unit 720) and Bob Snell (710) had a GMRS radio setup in the
Schenectady EOC. At his point, Amaturers were being "stationed" at one of
15 points around the city, to provide 911 call in points for residents.
It appeared that this could go 24 to 48 hours and man power was needed
for four hour shifts. REACT members worked along side RACES members to
provide this effort. By 2000 that evening the Verizon personnel had begun
restoring service to limited areas. Through coordination with the EOC,
which was manned by RACES and REACT members, our resources were
reallocated to different areas within the county. I was also interviewed
by the local FOX affialte WXXA and the interview was broadcast on the
news at 2200. By 2300 hours, 95% of the county was restored and the EOC
was secured at 0030 on the 29th.
The following Team 3030 members participated:
Bob Snell - Unit 710
Dave Wilkenson - Unit 719
Andy Lichoveri - Unit 716
Paul Becker - Unit 717
Ray Ginter - Unit 713
Larry Zuravin - Unit 720
It was gratifing to see REACT members (both Amaturer and non-Amaturer)
work so well with the local RACES members and the members of the
Schenectady ARA, the Albany ARA, and the other emergency services in and
arounf Schenectady County. These events really prove that the spirit of
cooperation exsists within the community.

Today, (12/30/00) we are under a winter weather advisory. NWS predicts
ten to sixteen inches of snow. Our Team is monitoring CB-9, 462.675, FRS
chan. 1 and the local Amaturers frequencies.
