For Wednesday, December 13, 2000
Temple, Texas (60 miles north of Austin)
A major ice storm passed through Central Texas Tuesday evening and
Wednesday morning causing the usual traffic accidents, tree damage and
downed power lines.
Most of the traffic problems occurred late Tuesday afternoon and night
as a light freezing rain began around 4:00 p.m. with temperatures in
the mid 20's. Non-essential activities were canceled Tuesday night and
some schools were already delaying Wednesday morning openings. The
local malls closed down at 6:00 p.m.
The real problems began around 11:00 p.m. Tuesday night with a steady
moderate freezing rain that lasted until shortly after 2:00 a.m.
Wednesday morning. Surface areas and trees were coated with about 3/8"
ice. I lost power around 3:00 a.m. and the outage lasted until just
before 5:00 a.m. Cracking and falling tree limbs could be heard
throughout the night. At daylight, I discovered I had lost a 5"
diameter limb from a cedar tree in my back yard.
The temperature began to rise after midnight and had risen from 28
degrees at midnight to 31 degrees by daybreak so roads were passable
except for bridges and overpasses. These had been sanded by this time
but there were still some accidents. I left for work around 9:30 a.m.
and did not have any problems on the 8 mile trek to work.
Temperatures rose to near 40 degrees by Wednesday afternoon and most
of the ice had melted by sundown. I had lost power again sometime
during the day for an unknown time.
One of the more unusual events that occurred Wednesday morning was a
6,000 gallon tanker truck that overturned on IH 35. The tanker
contained milk and oddly enough, the spill was classified as hazardous
due to the threat to wildlife from spoiled milk.
