For Tuesday, December 12, 2000
The low temperature at my weather station in Temple, Texas, 60 miles
north of Austin, Texas, dropped to 23.9 degrees this morning . This is
the second coldest minimum temperature of the year behind the 23.7
degrees of January 30th. The maximum temperature this afternoon only
reached 28 degrees, the first time in several years that the maximum
temperature failed to reach 30 degrees. Winds gusted to near 25 mph
this morning and the minimum wind chill I recorded was minus 4 degrees
at 3:00 a.m.
Central Texas is currently under an Ice Storm Warning through at least
9:00 a.m. Wednesday morning with the possibility of 1/2" of
accumulated ice. . Freezing rain began falling around 4:00 p.m.
creating hazardous traveling conditions. There have been numerous
traffic accidents and the elevated portions of IH 35 through Temple
has been closed. Non-essential meetings and gatherings for tonight
have been canceled and some schools have already announced delayed
openings for Wednesday. Intermittent freezing rain and sleet continues
at this hour (8:15 p.m. CST). The current temperature is 27 degrees.
