=> Southern Area Fires Update
NOVEMBER 11 -- LEXINGTON, KY: Firefighters had two busy days in a row in
two adjoining
northeastern Kentucky counties, according to a report in the Lexington
Herald-Leader; a Thursday
night fire destroyed Caudill Tire Company in Morehead, and another fire
yesterday destroyed a
finishing building at Globe Hardwood Manufacturing in Carter County.
"That's rather unusual, two big fires like that,'' said Mope Hartog with the
Hays Crossing Haldeman
Volunteer Fire Department.
Firefighters had to stay on the scene through the night to make sure gusty
winds didn't spread the fire
to nearby businesses. County volunteer departments from Farmers, Route 377,
Elliottville, and Hays
Crossing Haldeman helped fight the fire, and some of them rolled back out
yesterday morning to
help Olive Hill firefighters with the blaze at the hardwood factory in
Carter County. One owner
estimated the loss at more than $2 million.
The paper also reported that all 45 fires on the Daniel Boone National
Forest between October 29
and November 6 were considered arsons, according to Marie Walker with the
Forest Service. In
three of the fires, enough leads have been developed that investigations are
continuing. Because rain
has reduced the risk of forest fires, a ban on campfires in the Stearns,
Redbird, Somerset, and
London ranger districts was lifted yesterday. The week-old ban covered fires
outside developed
camping areas in those parts of the forest.
Elsewhere across the state, the Kentucky Interagency Coordination Center
reported this morning
that temperatures have dropped to 45º or 50º, with lows in the 30s and winds
of 10 to 20 mph.
Cooling trends are expected throughout the weekend. According to the
Kentucky Division of
Forestry, the Southeast District Complex was contained at 48,000 acres. The
Northern Rockies
Incident Management Team and the Kentucky Division of Forestry are
prioritizing and staffing fires;
no resources were assigned to the line, because Thursday's rainfall resulted
in poor access and
hazardous footing.
In North Carolina, the Brushy Ridge Complex was also contained - at 10,081
acres. This complex
includes the Brushy Ridge and Chimney fires. Mop-up, patrol, and rehab are
ongoing, and a Type
III team has taken over the management of the complex.
South Carolina reported this morning that fire danger is high near the coast
and low to moderate
elsewhere. Slightly over an inch of precipitation was received in the
mountains. Helicopters continued
bucket work on several carryover fires, dropping more than 53,000 gallons of
water. Light winds
and low RH are forecast for the next several days, and initial attack
activity is expected to remain
high.
In Tennessee, rainfall is helping with suppression efforts on several fires;
some reinforcement of
fireline and rehab is under way. On the Cherokee National Forest, the
Nolichucky Complex was
contained at 1510 acres. Four structures were confirmed lost on the
Horsehitch Fire, including two
cabins and two outbuildings. The Blevens Fire was contained at 250 acres
west of the town of Raon
Mountain. Substantial rainfall occurred yesterday.
In Virginia, the Shenandoah Complex is 85 percent contained at 24,197 acres.
Updates on this
complex are online at www.shenandoahfires.com; the Lexington Herald-Leader
story is online, and
more information is available from the Daniel Boone National Forest and the
Southern Area
Coordination Center.
