Subject: Sept 20th Weather Obs from Xenia High School
All -
There have been many good postings relating
to the Tornado that hit Xenia, OH in the late
afternoon or early evening of September 20th, 2000.
My contribution is the hourly weather record
from the AWS weather unit at Xenia High School.
Based on what I see in my Delorme mapping
program, and on the newspaper graphic at
http://enquirer.com/editions/2000/09/22/tornado450x550.jpg
it appears that the Tornado hit about 2 miles
west of town. The Xenia High School site of our
weather instruments is about 2 miles north of
the town center, or about 3 miles northeast of
the main damage center.
Several notes on the data presented below:
First of all, the clock is nine minutes fast
on the raw data presented below. So what is shown
as a 7:00 PM Ob is actually from 6:51 PM. (this
may actually be good, because NWS obs are about
that time also). Also note the time is EDT (Eastern
DAYLIGHT time), so it matches with the newspaper
time reports that showed the Tornado between 7:15PM
to 7:30PM local time (Eastern Daylight Time).
Secondly, the barometer at this site is not
calibrated exactly - - it appears to be reading about
0.05 to 0.09 in/Hg too high; but the main thing I
note in the barometric data is the rate of change,
with continual pressure falls from midday right up
until the Tornado hit.
Thirdly, the rest of the data seems to be quite
good. Note the temperature and dewpoint data seem in
very good agreement with the surface data plots
from the nearby airports (as seen on CIMMS page at
http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/misc/000920_ir4_anim.html )
Also note the big changes between 7:00 PM Ob and
the 8:00 PM OB (before and after the Tornado)
