Southwest Florida is now under a hurricane watch. We were told this tonight. It is expected that by sometime tomorrow, Tropical Storm Gordon will reach 85 mph Category 1 level. At the moment, expected landfall is just above Tampa, Fl. The Watch territory goes from Bonita Springs, Fl (South Lee County) to Suwannee above
Tampa. Most of the heavy weather (rain, thunderstorms, etc.) will be in the righthand quadrant; thus Lee and Charlotte Counties are expected to receive the brunt of this.
It is quite cloudy at the moment but no rain. It is expected that the first heavy rain will reach us overnite closer to the morning hours. Yesterday, the first rains from this
storm reached Southwest Florida with Collier County and eastern Lee County being the targets. Lehigh Acres (eastern Lee County) received over 4 inches of rain last night with severe thunderstorms along with it. Today at noontime (I work at The Breeze Corp's Lehigh Acres Citizen newspaper), rains returned with heavy downpours in
Lehigh accompanied by very spectacular lightning. Western Lee County has been relatively dry today. Lee and Charlotte Counties are also under a flood watch as the heavy rains will affect the two main rivers, The Caloosahatchee and The Peace River, along with the many creeks which feed into these rivers. Bonita Springs is vulnerable
down around the Imperial River which flows thru the area. We have a rain deficit of about 7 inches this year, so some type of tropical weather is our main hope of making up the ground necessary to safely go into the dry season which begins in October (with the exception of hurricanes, of course). This storm has been most interesting to
watch develop as now the center has aligned itself properly now, and I understand the wind shear action has lessened significantly which has allowed the change of
events in direction towards Florida. one benefit of the storm will be a 10 degree drop in high temperatures tomorrow with a high of 88 degrees predicted. Richard Macomber, Cape Coral, Florida (Western Lee County).
