Hi,
Thought I'd interject something quick about recon from my readings of how
that is done (as I understand it anyways).
First during daylight hours in a system less than Cat-3, "Flight Level" is
almost always 2,500 feet (900mb?)above sea level. Surface winds are usually
extrapolated down from there, I think their rule of thumb is 10% reduction
from flight level due to friction. However these Recon have 2 tricks to get
a more accurate surface report.
They have "dropsoudes" which can determine wind
speed and direction with the aid of GPS signalling,
and they have little buoys they can drop down into
the water as well to measure sea surface temps and
such. But I think the dropsoundes are the most common way. If the
meteorologist onboard has visual contact with the sea, they can estimate
wind speeds based
on the sea state. Their onboard doppler can probably
measure speed, but I doubt they can profile with a
downward angle...
At night, I believe flight level is always 10,000 feet [700mb?] and
dropsounds are usually always used in this case for more accurate surface
estimations.
Mike

the know" could run down the requirements for a T.D. for me... but TWC
reported that the aircraft found 50mph winds at flight level (do they
even measure at the surface?). And there was clear circulation on the
satellite image. I guess if there's anything that is holding it back
it's lack of low pressure or lack of storms??
