Winchester (nw) VA

Hello everyone

Wed afternoon, there was a heavy haze (visibility down to 7 miles, but
good AQI). A few cumulus, but a far cry from the botched NWS forecast
(70% thunderstorm likelihood). In fact, even at 5pm there were no
thunderstorms south of the Mason Dixon line [PA's south border].

Morning low 64 rising a sultry high of 87 at 5pm. Afternoon heat index
94.

Watching the radar, returns for a "decent" storm here were unimpressive.
Even as the storms were within "line of sight", they were still _not_
impressive, - occasional thunder/lightning, no wall clouds.
Disappointed, i went back inside. However, the storms developed nicely
while overhead, & into a bow echo. Initial gusts reached 36 mph, the
strongest summertime gust i've measured on my nearly 2 year old wx
station. Heavy rain rates (<1" per hour), and what became frequent
lightning (10 to 15 flashes/minute). The storms had made it, albeit 6
hours late.

Total rain Wed from the storm & it's rain afterward was .57", bringing
the 7 day total to over 3.5" (that is a normal 5 week total this time of
year here). The June total is 4.55", which is well short of June's all
time record, set in 1972,
Thanks to Agnes (6.5") and a heavy t-storm the next week (1.5") we had
about 11" in June '72

The storms raced E, reaching Washington DC's nearest NW suburbs about 75
minutes later.
According to tv reports, flooding prompted several high water rescues in
Frederick Co MD, about 45 miles WNW of Washington. However, checking the
Frederick newspaper this am, the storm was treated as an usual event.
[In fact, of 8 newscasts in 2 small, & 2 metro markets, only 3 tv
staions led the storm as their lead Wed eve at 11.)
