At least two people died and two others were injured in Oaxaca, Mexico, when three vehicles fell into a stream after a highway collapsed under the weight of heavy rains caused by Hurricane Carlotta.
"It rained for about 7 hours so the weight of the rains caused 20 metres of the surface of the highway to weaken and collapse," explained Javier Gonzalez, a road policeman.
Carlotta has forced the evacuation of more than 1,000 residents on both Mexican coasts as it continues its trek in the Eastern Pacific.
As of 2 p.m. PDT Tuesday, the hurricane was located about 220 miles southwest of Acapulco, Mexico, with sustained winds of 100 mph. Carlotta is classified as a Category 2 hurricane on the five-step Saffir Simpson scale of hurricane intensity. The hurricane was moving west-north-west, away from the coast, at around 9 mph.
Although Carlotta is forecast to remain offshore, it is expected to continue producing heavy rain in parts of southern Mexico. "These rains still have the potential to produce life-threatening flash floods and mudslides," the NHC reported.
Hurricane-force winds extend about 30 miles from Carlotta's center. Tropical storm-force winds extend outward up to 125 miles.
