INCIDENT MANAGEMENT SITUATION REPORT
MONDAY, MAY 29, 2000 - 0530 MDT
NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS LEVEL III
CURRENT SITUATION:

New large fires were reported in the Southwest, Southern, Eastern Great
Basin, Northern Rockies, and Rocky Mountain Areas. Initial attack activity
was heavy in Florida and most resources within the state are committed.
Initial attack activity was moderate in the Southwest Area and light
elsewhere. An Area Command Team (Harbour) has been ordered to manage new
fires in northern Arizona. The National Interagency Coordination Center
mobilized helicopters, infrared aircraft, a lead plane, caterers, shower
units, radio equipment, crews, and miscellaneous overhead. Very high to
extreme fire indices were reported in Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, California,
Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado, Kansas, and Mississippi.

SOUTHWEST AREA LARGE FIRES:

PUMPKIN, Kaibab National Forest. A Type II Incident Management Team
(Anderson) is assigned. The fire is 25 miles northeast of Flagstaff, AZ and
has burned into the Kendrick Wilderness Area. Burnout operations are
continuing and good progress was made in constructing firelines outside the
wilderness boundary on the east. Winds yesterday afternoon caused a
significant increase in activity.

CERRO GRANDE COMPLEX, Bandelier National Park. An Area Command Team
(Edrington) and a Type II Incident Management Team (Praytor) are assigned.
Thunderstorm passage on 5/25 resulted in a small slopover on the west side
of the fire. Steep topography at that part of the fire is making containment
difficult.
SOUTHERN AREA LARGE FIRES:

KINSEY 2, Francis Marion and Sumter National Forests. A Type I Incident
Management Team (Melton) is assigned. This complex consists of 12 fires
which are burning near Cordesville, SC in long needle pine and southern
rough. Mop up operations are progressing well.

HOLEY LAND, Florida State Division of Forestry. This fire is burning in
grass and swampland at the Holey Land Wildlife Management Area, 40 miles
northwest of Ft. Lauderdale, FL. The fire is in a limited action
conservation area and will only be monitored at this time. There is a
possible threat to some powerlines.
GREEN SWAMP COMPLEX, Florida State Division of Forestry. This complex
includes all the state fires in Citrus, Sumter, Hernando, Pasco, and Lake
counties. Fires over 100 acres (with acreage in parenthesis) include: CHAIN
LINK (2,507), GREEN SWAMP GROVE (550), USDA (130), DM (700), DW (100),
CROOKED PINES (100), and SLOANS RIDGE (112). Resources reported in the table
below are totals for all fires in the complex. Several of the fires were
previously contained but are now experiencing reburn.
SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA AREA LARGE FIRES:

TAHQUITZ, San Bernardino National Forest. A Type II Incident Management Team
(Conklin) is assigned. The fire is 16 miles east of Hemet, CA. Current
threat is to Mount San Jacinto State Park. The acreage estimate has been
revised due to more accurate mapping.
EASTERN GREAT BASIN LARGE FIRES:

MOTOQUA, Cedar City Field Office, BLM. The fire, which started on 5/27, is
23 miles northwest of St. George, UT. The fire is burning in desert shrub,
blackbrush, grass, and pinyon-juniper fuels. Gusty winds, low relative
humidities and record high temperatures are challenging containment efforts.
ROCKY MOUNTAIN AREA LARGE FIRES:

BOSQUE, Las Animas County. This fire is near Weston, CO. It was ignited by
lightning on 5/26, then grew from 25 to 200 acres the next day. Threats are
to some power lines and methane gas wells.
NORTHERN ROCKIES AREA LARGE FIRES:

HARPERS RIDGE, Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge. This lightning
caused fire is south of Glasgow, MT. The fire is burning up to natural
barriers and a road pushed by strong winds.
OUTLOOK:

*** A RED FLAG WARNING IS POSTED IN FLORIDA FOR LOW AFTERNOON HUMIDITIES ***

Northern Florida will be mostly sunny. In the south, it will be partly
cloudy with a chance of scattered afternoon showers and thunderstorms during
the afternoon hours. High temperatures will be in the 80's on the coasts and
in the 90's in the interior. Winds will be southwest to west at 10 to 15
mph. Minimum relative humidities will range from 30 to 40 percent.

Arizona will be mostly sunny and hot. Temperatures will be in the mid 80's
in the mountains and up to 115 in the southern deserts. Winds will be
southwest at 15 to 25 mph. Minimum relative humidities will be 5 to 15
percent.

New Mexico will be mostly sunny and hot. Isolated afternoon thunderstorms
are forecast for the southern mountains. High temperatures will be from the
mid 70's in the mountains to around 100 in the southern deserts. Winds will
be southwest to west at 10 to 25 mph. Minimum relative humidities will be 10
to 20 percent.

Southern Utah will be mostly sunny, windy and hot. High temperatures will be
in the 90's and mid 100's. Winds will be southwest at 15 to 30 mph. Minimum
humidities will be 10 to 20 percent.

South Carolina will be mostly cloudy in the west, and partly cloudy in the
central and eastern parts of the state. There is a chance of showers and
thunderstorms in the west and along the coast. High temperatures will be 75
to 85. Winds will be northwest to north at 10 to 15 mph. Minimum relative
humidities will range from 35 to 50 percent.

Southern California will be sunny except for patchy morning fog along the
coast. Temperatures will be from the mid 70's in coastal areas up to 115 in
the deserts. Winds will be upslope or up valley at 5 to 15 mph in the
afternoon. Minimum relative humidity inland will be from 5 to 30 percent.
