[STORMREPORTS] Thursday Eastern NC / SC chase report

Today looks like Thursday all over again...maybe more intense. Very similar
tornado watch box...

Here's Thursday's report...

Brad Riley and I left Fat Boys (hamburger and chicken place) in West Columbia,
on Thursday, May 25 around 1:50 PM. The SPC had put the eastern parts of SC and
NC in a slight risk, and from the storms earlier that ROARED across NC at 50+
MPH, it was hoped an outflow boundary of these storms would cause more activity
later on. Out on I-20 east toward Florence we rode in temperatures hovering
around 101. (Columbia SC's 101 broke the record) and made our first stop around
Bishopville for a data check. Unfortunately all day long the laptop's modem (
NOT a cellular modem...that's what killed us for most of the day...never got to
see radars or data) waged war with the cellphone. It was hazy and visual
observations were not very helpful. We missed the Bishopville storm as it blew
up like a bomb. The next storm, as we were on I-95 toward Fayetteville, near the
SC border was just 10 minutes ahead of us, and we were taunted by rain, and
very dark sky off to the east and a few rumbles of thunder. At Lumberton, I
decided we should go more coastal. A good but late idea, another warning for a
[the] storm east of there, near Bladenboro / Clarkton. Heading down SC 211 we
never could catch up. When we crossed US 74 we headed more coastal, caught SC 17
and went down the coast. It seemed we were done for the day. On the video, I
said at the very start...." Is this going to be BUSTS R US or Mesocyclone city?"
It appeared like it would be BUSTS R US. As we approached Conway SC I tuned to
AM 1050. Now this is a 5000 watt station and I noticed that as we just got a FEW
miles out of town the signal promptly got buried in static. HMMM. As we neared
Florence there was a warning for a severe thunderstorm and a developing
tornado...RIGHT where we were. We figured that. Super lightning, and pouring
rain and then into golf ball hail. {at}#$%! We are on the Interstate, and the core
is punching US! Lucky for us we MISSED the grapefruit (reported by someone)
sized hail and the supposed tornado. I guess we were lucky at that. I'm sure
Brad did not want his Durango treated to the Jim Leonard Hail Treatment. We
checked in at the big truck stop that had NO dataports, but the weather channel
showed everthing racing east past us so, with a sigh we headed home. When we got
back on the interstate, we found tons of leaves all over and a tree in the
median.
Brad did call Richard Horodoner who did tell us where the storms were, but
by this time it was too dark, and they had gone east, out into very rural
areas, too far to even safely observe from the back end.
I will say there were too many stupid people parking under bridges. They
ended up being lucky.... THIS time.

500+ miles and 1 hour and 9 minutes of MOSTLY boring video....
With all the storms being fast moving HP's and hazy conditions and no data to
see where stuff was we were hampered all afternoon and evening. The Florence
lightning show made up for the otherwise frustrating day.
