Hey Jerry (and all):

Yes, you're right about the 100+ mph wind gust in DC--it happened at Andrews AFB (you know, home of Air Force 1) and they clocked it at 115 mph during a nasty line of severe storms that stomped through here early this evening. They also reported a possible tornado there, and speculated that it might have been a gustnado. No official confirmation yet on that.

I read earlier that Jason Breakiron of Manassas, VA was hooking up with Steve Minghini of Winchester, VA to go storm chasing today. It was a banner day for it. I was actually out their way this afternoon, attending a Star Trek convention in Chantilly, VA, just a couple miles south of Dulles International Airport (IAD) and only a few miles from the National Weather Service's Sterling VA facility.

By the time we left the house (2ish--daughter had an eye appointment earlier, hence the late start), you could see the beginning of the storms on radar, and outside the convection was quite visible. I decided to take Noah (our nickname for the NOAA weather radio) and sure enough, by the time we reached the convention site around 3 pm, he'd gone off several times. Discretion being the better part of valor (and the fact that there were LOTS of Klingons at this convention), I decided to leave Noah in the car. Good choice.

By the time the event was over at 6 pm, the sky to our west was really getting dark, and you could see the storm rapidly approaching. The lightning was getting very frequent and popping out all over the sky. I tried to take a few photos of this storm but it was starting to rain and the lightning was too frequent for my comfort. Even had to fuss at hubbie for sticking Noah's antenna out the car window (Gee, honey--do you have a death wish?!?). Stopped at a gas station to get something to drink and observed the attendant racing to gather up the plastic trash cans before the wind got to them.

We raced the storm home from Chantilly, VA to Lanham, MD, which took about 45 minutes. It was quite a ride. The lightning was zapping all around and it was raining with occasional pea-sized hail. No real downpour occurred, just a steady rain. The worst of the storm was to my south. Andrews AFB is about 10 miles to my south. I recorded at least a half inch of rain, but totals are incomplete because it is still raining. By the time we got home, Noah had been yelling his fool head off. Glad to know he works!!

  SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS
Well folks the thunderstorms have finally made it to Rhode Island. As I am typing this note, man made fireworks are going off over the Rhode Island State House, marking the 100 anniversary of the building, and natural fireworks are just starting in Rhode Island.

I just heard the first clap of thunder as I started to write this letter. It should be a good place to take a picture in Providence with natural fireworks, and man made fire works going off at the same time.

Some of the storms have started to break up as the approached the state, but they are still very heavy storms. TV 12 radar has estimated some of the winds in the area of these storms to be in the area of 58 miles per hour with some hail and very heavy rain. Street flooding is very possible.

TV 12 has also reported that just east of Washington, D. C. tonight some winds were over 100 miles per hour.
The rain has also just this moment started to fall. I don't know how the people are watching the fire works in Providence, but I think that they should have held them off until tomorrow night. I can't distinguish between the natural fireworks and the man made fireworks at this time, but with the heavy rain that is coming down, I would think that they would have put them off until tomorrow night.

Well, I think that I am going to end for now, get off of this thing, and check on Weather Dog Buffy, Weatherfun's Mascot. Right about now, I would think that she is quite upset. Ah these mutts.
