We had another hot dry day on the central peninsula with readings in
the mid and upper 90's in inland areas.
I live in Plant City which is approximately 25 miles east of Tampa
and 40 miles from the Gulf Of Mexico. Though we are also in desperate
need of rainfall, we did luck out with above normal rainfall in April,
just a fluke compared to the rest of the region but the countryside in
my area is still relatively green.
I went to my parents house today in Dade City, which is 30 miles
north of Plant City and 40 miles NE of Tampa. It's an exceptionally
beautiful area of steep hills, beautiful lakes, springs, clear running
rivers and lush forests of pine, maple, oak, hickory, dogwood and more,
much like north Georgia.
As I drove around the region which is dubbed "The Florida Mountains"
I WAS SHOCKED. It looked like the thrust fault hills of California in
summer. Everything was burned up; dead pasture grass, dead orange and
peach orchards, grape vineyards, dying maple, pine and oak,
unbelievable. Very little in the way of irrigation is in place, as the
region averages 65 inches of rainfall per year.
Rainfall records says it's the driest period since 1915 and the
second driest since 1835.
