Storm Report - Temple, Bell County, Texas
for Tuesday, March 28, 2000
All times CST
Another day and it seems another severe storm. I wasn't able to follow this
storm as closely as I would have liked so most of this report will not be
first hand.
Around 4:30 p.m., scattered thunderstorms began forming west of a Lampasas
to Hillsboro line, or about 60 miles to our west. These moved to the west
and intensified. I had to run a quick errand to Killeen, about 30 miles to
the west and could see the tops of these storms by the time I got to
Killeen around 5:00 p.m. By the time I had returned to my home, the blowoff
from these approaching storms had made skies mostly cloudy.
At 6:06 p.m., the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, OK issued Tornado
Watch #130 for South Central Texas, including Bell County, effective until
11:00 p.m.
>From here on out I was only able to catch an occasional radar and ham radio
update. The storm that had formed west of Killeen had become and at 6:43
p.m., the NWS in Fort Worth issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Bell
County, effective until 7:45 p.m. At 6:43 p.m., the severe storm was 8
miles SW of Killeen moving East at 20 mph.
The severe thunderstorm tracked across the southern part of the county and
then veered to the ESE and began dissipating as it reached the east county
line. At 7:55 p.m., storm spotters in Salado reported dime size hail to the
Bell County EOC.
