Hey all,
Snow started here just after 9 this morning, and picked up in intensity
fairly quickly (went from flurries to light snow in less than 10
seconds). It snowed moderately, with some heavy bursts, for much of the
daylight hours (snowed about .5" hour). The snow changed to a
sleet/freezing rain mixture late in the afternoon. At that time, there
was 4.5" of snow on the ground. Freezing rain became the dominant
precip type shortly after the changeover, and 1/8" of ice accumulated on
most surfaces before the dry slot raced in from PA. A small batch of
precip is now moving in (probably freezing rain). NWS forecast for my
area (Essex County) is for primarily rain for the overnight into
tomorrow morning...with some icing in protected valleys.
Today's snowfall brings the season's total snowfall at this location to
22.5"...considerably higher than the last 3 winters. As a side note,
the average snowfall for this area is around 25", so there's a pretty
good chance I'll end up with above-normal snowfall for this season. :)
