Storm Report for Temple, Bell County, Texas (130 miles South of Dallas,
Texas) for Tuesday, February 22, 2000.
A line of severe thunderstorms passed through the area late Tuesday evening
resulting in two reported tornadoes in Bell County.
A line of thunderstorms formed along a dryline in far West Texas early
Tuesday afternoon and proceeded to move east during the afternoon. At 6:35
p.m., a Severe Thunderstorm Watch was posted for Bell and surrounding
counties as the squall line approached from the west. This watch was in
effect from 7 p.m. until midnight.
At 9:33 p.m, a Tornado Warning was issued for Bell County by the National
Weather Service. A possible tornado had been detected by Doppler radar
approximately 10 miles SW of Killeen, Texas (30 miles SW of my location)
moving East at 40 mph. At 9:53 p.m., a tornado was reported on the ground
near US Highway 190 in Killeen by the Bell County Sheriff's Department. No
damage was reported from this tornado.
At 10:06 p.m., the Bell County Emergency Management reported a tornado at
the Jackson Marine Boat Storage on FM 439 about 1 mile west of Belton (10
miles west my location). Several buildings had roof damage and one wall was
blown in. Photos of this damage can be viewed at

At 9:59 p.m., the NWS issued a second Tornado Warning for Bell County. A
possible tornado was indicated by Doppler radar approximately 10 miles west
of Temple (15 miles NW of my location) moving to the east at 35 mph. No
damage was reported from this possible tornado.
Shortly before 10:00 p.m. I observed the approaching wall cloud as it was
being backlit by lightning. I did not see any signs of any funnel clouds.
The thunderstorms passed over my location at 10:05 p.m. and I received
heavy rain, extensive lightning, SW winds around 40 mph and some
intermittent pea-sized hail. The main brunt of the storm had passed by
10:15 p.m. with light to moderate rain continuing until 11:15 p.m. I
recorded .69" of rain from this storm.
